What If Football Players Ran Their Own Team?

One of the many twists of the FCFL (Fan Controlled Football League) is that the players will be able to hold FAN tokens and influence the direction of the team.  I’ve confirmed with FCFL support that this will not only be possible, but will be encouraged.  That’s going to lead to a mix of good, potentially bad, and downright interesting possibilities.

The players are already key stakeholders in the success of the league and team they’re on.  They also have a great deal of knowledge about the inner workings of things on their own team.  By giving them a voice in decisions, they’ll be more motivated and more loyal and recruiting new players to the league may become easier over time.

Team rules may vary on whether players can use phones on the sidelines.  Normally I’d expect that it wouldn’t be allowed, but since the league is focused on interaction with fans and on the remote fan experience, I think there’s a chance that some (if not all) teams may allow fans to use their phones.  Does this mean a player can call a play and then go out on the field and execute it?  I doubt it.  The pace of the game will probably be too fast.  But they can give instructions to a friend or family member on how to log in and vote on their behalf: “Just give me the rock.”

An interesting twist on that idea is if a wealthy player attempts to seize control of their team’s voting.  If they can amass enough tokens, they might be able to seize complete control of their team’s play calling and give themselves the ball every play. They could threaten to (or actually go ahead and) fire the coach.  They could potentially even sign themselves to a nice long-term contract!  It’ll be interesting to see if any players attempt this and whether the FCFL eventually needs to do anything to limit it.
